A short hands-on look at Raycast, the macOS launcher that has steadily replaced Spotlight, Alfred and a small pile of menu bar apps for me.

Raycast — a quick look at the Mac launcher that ate my dock

Raycast is one of those apps you install meaning to “just try it” and quietly never close again. It started as a Spotlight replacement and grew into something closer to a small operating system inside a launcher.

What it does on day one

Out of the box, Raycast replaces Spotlight: open apps, search files, do calculator math, kill stuck processes, switch windows. The keystroke flow is faster than Spotlight because the result list is more aggressively prioritized by recency and use.

Where it gets interesting

The extension store is where Raycast becomes hard to give up. A few I use daily:

  • GitHub — search repos, PRs and issues without opening the browser.
  • Linear — create and update tickets from the launcher.
  • Color Picker — eyedropper that copies the hex code straight to clipboard.
  • Snippets — text expansion with placeholders.
  • Window Management — keyboard-driven window tiling.

Each of these used to be a separate menu bar app on my Mac.

What I do not love

The interface, while clean, can feel busy when you have a lot of extensions. The Pro tier (AI chat, cloud sync of preferences) is reasonable but not essential.

Worth installing if…

  • You hit Cmd+Space dozens of times a day.
  • You like keyboard-driven workflows.
  • You want to delete two or three menu bar apps.

If you spend most of your day in the browser already, the gain is smaller — but the calculator, snippets and clipboard history alone are worth the install.
